In September 52 BC The battle of Alesia took place between Vercingetorix leading the Gallic tribes against Julius Caesar leading the Roman armies..Vercingetorix who had retreated into his fort in Alesia was soon laid under siege by the Roman armies, Vercingetorix relied on his Gallic Allies to attack from the outside. Julius Caesar realising this built his own fortification from outside having this way protected his army from the reinforcing Gallic tribes and forced Vercingetorix into submission. Vercingetorix’s fortification could hold out the Romans but the population started to soon run out of food and cannibalism started to take place. Vercingetorix surrendered to Julius Caesar and the Gallic uprising was put down.
